The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
