The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a binding element holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Surprising Presence
One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
