The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
