The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
