A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
